Alex Presents Research at SenseCam 2012
3rd April 2012

Alex Wood presented our research on 'DejaView' at the recent 2012 SenseCam Symposium. DejaView is a system designed to help sufferers of memory loss, in particular by allowing them to receive relevant real-time feedback. In the current demonstrator, this feedback gives the wearer information on who they are looking at - for example their name, relationship, when they last saw them etc. Alex was also awarded a bursary by the conference organisers to attend the symposium, and chaired one of the sessions.

Stuart's Internship on Energy Harvesting
30th September 2011

This summer, one of our undergraduate electronic engineering students, Stuart Barrow, worked with me for three months on the pioneering EPSRC-funded project on "Next Generation Energy-Harvesting Electronics - A Holistic Approach". Stuart developed an ultra low-power system that analyses vibrations and transmits them wirelessly. The photo shows Stuart testing his system on a car engine - the hardware on the engine is detecting vibrations, processing them, and transmitting them wirelessly to a laptop computer.

These opportunities for summer internships are great for students, as it allows them to apply the things that they have learnt to real electronics projects in a research environment, and great for the University as interns make very real and valuable contributions. This has been the second year that I have employed Stuart on an internship, and the skills and knowledge that he has developed during his degree have made him a very valuable part of the research team.

Hui Huang Presents Paper at Eurosensors 2011
6th September 2011

Hui Huang (Sam) presented his research on "Human-powered inertial energy harvesters: the effect of orientation, location and activity on obtainable power" at this year's Eurosensors conference in Athens, Greece. His presentation was part of a session on "System Energy Issues".

Hui Huang Presents Poster at EH 2011
7th February 2011

At this year's Energy Harvesting Network conference, Hui Huang (Sam) presented his poster on the topic of "A Feasibility Study on Body-Worn Inertial Energy Harvesting during Walking and Running". The conference, held at Savoy Place (home of the IET in central London), had over 100 attendees; Sam was able to discuss his research with all those interested.

ESD Group Christmas Party
9th December 2010

The ESD Christmas Party was held this evening at an Indian Restaurant in the centre of Southampton. Everyone seemed to have a very enjoyable evening, and the restauarant even had a magician touring the tables all night (see the photo)! This created some controversial discussions on how the tricks may have worked, and also a lot of confusion over what was happening (I think some people were beginning to believe in magic)!

After the meal, a group of us continued the celebrations afterwards in the Red Lion, a pub in Southampton that dates back to 1148AD!

I Want to Join the Team!

PhD Students: I have a small number of vacancies available for motivated, high-quality students with a first-class degree from a top-quality institution. The University offers a number of scholarships to high-quality students; only a very limited number are available for overseas students, and only very high-quality and academically exceptional students will qualify. I strongly encourage all overseas applicants to investigate scholarships that may be available externally, for example from their home governments, professional bodies or industry.

All PhD applications need to be processed via our Postgraduate Admissions Office. In your covering letter, please propose the area that you are interested in researching (you can see what my research interests are on this website) and give an indication of why you want to do a PhD here at Southampton under my supervision. If you do not know what area you wish to research for a PhD, please at at least discuss your skills, weaknesses and what motivates and interests you. If you are a UK/EU student, or an overseas student that has already secured external funding, I am happy to discuss your application with you beforehand; if not, please do not send generic emails containing CVs to me, as I will not respond.

PostDoc Opportunities: When I have PostDoc positions available, they will be listed on www.jobs.ac.uk and www.jobs.soton.ac.uk. They will also be announced on the News and Impact page on this website. I do not respond to generic emails asking if there are any positions available.

Internships: The University offers a small number of funded internships to students that are registered on our undergraduate programmes. If you are a high quality, motivated student studying at the University of Southampton, please contact me. While I sometimes offer internships (of >3 months) to very high quality and motivated overseas students, I cannot offer any scholarships for these.
